SUMMARY:Climate Dissensus and Civil Disobedience: Roundtable discussion about Legality, Justification, and Legitimacy
DESCRIPTION:\nIn an era marked by escalating climate crises and polarized public discourse, acts of unlawful activism that protesters defend as necessary acts of civil disobedience have become a regularly deployed but controversial form of engagement within democracies in Europe. This roundtable brings together an activist, a legal practitioner, a philosopher, and a legal scholar to explore the complex interplay between law, moral justification, and democratic legitimacy in the context of climate dissent.\n\n\n\n\nHow should we understand the role of civil disobedience when conventional political channels appear inadequate or unresponsive?\n\n\n\nWhat are the legal and ethical boundaries of protest in democratic societies?\n\n\n\nAnd how do courts and institutions respond to, or reshape, these acts of resistance?\n\n\n\n\nJoin us for a critical conversation at the intersection of law, justice, and climate activism. We warmly invite everyone to this discussion, explicitly not only those, who believe that unlawful protests are a legitimate form of engagement in a democracy but also those that reject this form of engagement.\n\n\n\n\nPlease register here to join us at the Law School or online. ( https://uvaforms.formstack.com/forms/climate_dissensus )\n\n\n\n\nSpeakers:\n\n\n\nWillem Jebbink ( https://jebbinksoeteman.nl/willem-jebbink/ ), an experienced lawyer representing (climate) activists before court.\n\n\n\nJelle de Graaf ( https://www.jelledegraaf.nl/ ), an activist who has engaged in lawful but also unlawful activism and has recently published a book ( https://www.starfishbooks.org/product/jelle-de-graaf-alles-staat-op-het-spel/ ) on his motivations.\n\n\n\nColin Hickey ( https://acelg.uva.nl/profile/h/i/c.j.hickey/c.j.hickey.html ), philosopher, and Jerfi Uzman ( https://acelg.uva.nl/profile/u/z/j.uzman/j.uzman.html ), professor of public law, who have both engaged with civil disobedience in their work.\n\n\n\nModerator: Rena Hänel ( https://acelg.uva.nl/profile/h/a/r.e.hanel/r.e.hanel.html ), PhD, European Studies\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCo-organised by the Strategic Climate Litigation project ( https://climatelitigation.uva.nl/ ), Amsterdam Centre for European Studies ( https://aces.uva.nl/ ) and RED-SPINEL ( https://redspinel.iee-ulb.eu/ ).\n\n\n\n\n
