Climate Litigation
The ‘world’s largest climate lawsuit’ kicks off in The Hague
Professor Christina Eckes gave an interesting interview to Chris Kijne on the Dutch radio program NOS ‘Met het Oog op Morgen’ about the unique legal case that has begun at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in The Hague.
The case was brought forward by a group of students in the Pacific Islands with the support of the Vanuatu government, and must clarify what obligations other countries have to combat climate change. Lawyers and representatives from more than 100 countries and organisations will make submissions before the ICJ over the next two weeks.
Christina answered questions such as what does this case mean for global climate policy and will compensation actually have to be paid?
