Climate Litigation
Na Shell richt Milieudefensie de pijlen op ING met nieuwe klimaatzaak
(After Shell, Milieudefensie targets ING with new climate case)
Professor Christina Eckes was quoted in this article for NU.nl. 27 March. Written by Emma van Bergeijk.
Milieudefensie will summon ING (the largest bank in NL) on Friday 4 April with a demand to halve its greenhouse gas emissions. And not just it’s direct emissions but indirect emissions such as the oil and gas companies that are financed by ING.
It is unsure yet if the case will succeed but legal experts are watching closely because it could be another gamechanger for climate cases.
Professor Christina Eckes was asked to comment: “These types of legal cases contribute to the discussion about how we as a society deal with climate change. For example, should you take more responsibility if you have more power?” says Eckes.
